Keep Calm And Get Wiggy With It

So I lost my hair. This was bound to happen but I thought it wouldn't be until after the actual stem cell transplant. However, it seems the last chemo was enough to kill off all my precious follicles. Ah well. It sucks but I'm not losing sleep over it. The process was weird and more uncomfortable than I imagined but now that it's done, I'm OK with it. I'm also curious to see if it will grow back differently.

I'm now having a bit of fun figuring out head coverings and wigs. I'm getting a proper wig fitted this week. In the meantime I'm rocking a couple loaners like this cosplay gem (thanks to my most Excellent friend for the care package! xoxo):

Otherwise things are good. I had my stem cell collection in Halifax last week and other than a few blips in the preparation, it went really well. They were able to collect enough cells in one day, which was a definite bonus as it could have taken all week! I'm now waiting for 'the main event', which is scheduled for the week after Easter.

I can't say I'm not nervous. The procedure is scary enough, then there's Covid-19. This is not the best time to be wiping out one's immune system. However, I'll be carefully monitored and am sure the hospital will make any necessary protocol adjustments -- I'm trying not to panic. I've been avoiding crowds for months anyway, so my day to day isn't really going to change although I may be even more of a hermit than normal. After this morning's insanity at the grocery store, I think I'll pass along that chore to Scott and get my daily steps in on the treadmill (yes, I consider grocery shopping to be part of my exercise program). I am happy that I don't have too many hospital visits scheduled for the next month and that I have a reasonable supply of hand sanitizer (and hopefully toilet paper;)).

That's it for now. Keep calm, wash your hands, stay away, and remember this is not the apocalypse!

  1. Hi Gwen, I'm Mary Keshen's sister Peg. Mare sent me your Get Wiggy blog. Love the pink wig! I'm sure the proper one you got fitted for will be just as becoming. Your wonderful smile is the best indicator of good health after the coming main event in April. Wishing you all the best from my solitary confinement in the Ottawa Valley.
